We said goodbye to Bourbon at the end of last year. Having lost Rugby the year prior, I have had a lot of time to compare the two (vastly different) experiences, and form some opinions about living with senior dogs, helping them as they age, and letting them go.
I am lucky that both dogs live long, full lives. They had many friends, adventures and achievements. I’ve found peace in the fact that they missed out on very little, and I have few regrets looking back over their lives.
I am most thankful that both dogs were well photographed, and so many of the memories I have with them can be relived with a quick scroll of our photo albums.
So this is your reminder to take the photo. Go on the adventure. Appreciate your dog. Showcase your dog. You will cherish the photos when they are gone.
Today would have been Bourbon’s 13th birthday. I got Bourbon shortly after starting Leash Free Living, so her passing has felt like the ending of an era. Her presence is missed at home, but we spent some time today remembering her and admiring some of her past Valentine’s photos.
Happy Valentine’s Day, and Happy Birthday, Bourbon.
